66% of all Romanians say they can't afford to save, not even for a pension, this being the main reason why they don't put money aside, according to research made in January 2008 by Henley Centre
Headlighit Vision for AVIVA Plc. The second reason (63% of all answers) is that Romanians like to have easy access to their financial resources. The other reasons invoked by respondents are the small levels of interest rates (18%) and a preexisting loan, that prevents them from saving anything.
In Central and Eastern Europe, shows the same research, only Hungarians surpass the Romanians at this: 77% of Hungarians say they can't save because they can't afford to. On the other hand, only 34% of Russians and 37% of Czechs say they can't afford saving anything.
According to the survey, 63% of all Romanians say they don't save because they like having easy access to their financial resources, probably with the goal of immediate consumption. The same attitude is quite widespread in the region: 74% in Hungary, 70% in the Czech Republic, 68% in
Lithuania and 66% in Russia.
